Construction Safety

Aids to Navigation for the Construction Phase of Offshore Wind Farms

Any construction site can be dangerous but especially offshore when water could hide hazardous obstacles. Using buoys to cordon off the construction site and self-contained lanterns to identify structures in the water, we make sure that mariners and workers safety navigate through and around an offshore wind construction site.

More Information

To kick off construction at Iberdrola’s Baltic Eagle wind farm, Sabik Offshore deployed four massive steel cardinal buoys to mark the boundaries of the offshore site. Installed at 30 meters depth, the buoys now ensure clear navigation and a safe working environment. A wave measurement buoy provides real-time sea state data – setting the stage for a smooth and secure build of the OSS.

Our Marking Solutions
for the Constuction Phase

Just as you would recognize a conventional construction site through cones, tape and barriers, an offshore windfarm area also has to be clearly marked as a construction site. After multiple structures are in the water, it is imperative that all the lights are synchronized to communicate the larger seen obstruction.

1 | Area Protection

Sabik Offshore places cardinal buoys at key locations to clearly mark the construction site of an offshore wind farm. Additional intermediate warning buoys along the line can also indicate a construction site.

2 | Temporary Marking

Since mains power is not available, self-contained lanterns with integrated batteries and solar panels for charging are needed.
Each light needs to be visible 360 degrees around the structure. This could mean that a second light may be needed.

Area Protection

Before construction begins, the offshore site must be clearly marked as a restricted area. Sabik Offshore deploys illuminated cardinal and intermediate buoys to define the perimeter of the work zone. With distinctive shapes and IALA-compliant flash patterns, they ensure the area is visible and recognized as an active construction site – day and night.

Temporary Marking

Even before main power is available, every offshore structure must be safely marked. Sabik Offshore provides self-contained lanterns with solar charging and battery backup to ensure 360° visibility of foundations, transition pieces, and turbines. Synchronized flash patterns signal a single, unified obstruction – right from the start.
